8 Best Apps for Contractors

Over the spring and summer I’ve been building a house. Ok, let me make this clear, I’m not building anything. A contractor and his amazing crew are building my house. I’m just picking out appliances and wall colors on swatches. With that said though, I’ve been trying to be involved by showing up to the work site randomly from time to time to ask questions and act like I understand the answers to those questions.

Of course since everything in my life always relates back to the mobile revolution, I asked my contractor Mike if he used his iPhone 4S for work? Initially he answered “yes”, mention phone calls, texts, and emails made from the phone. I started to dig a little deeper with Mike asking how often he used apps on his phone to help him build houses and I was a little surprised to find out that Mike in fact rarely used his apps to help him do his job every day. So, for Mike and all the other contractors out there, here are the 8 best apps for contractors to use every day.

1. SmartBidNet

SmartBidNet, using bid management systems, the SmartBidNet iPhone app allows you create and track your bid process with your subcontractors, and companies, all the while keeping your personal information safe and secure. SmartBidNet contractors like you with accessible information to make bid projects easier and on time.

2. FingerCAD

Available as both and iPhone & and iPad app, the FingerCAD application lets you draw technical drawings with your finger (assisted by the app of course). The final design is saved and can be shared to email or iMessage. Personally, I like the iPad version of the app better than the iPhone version.

3. Architect’s Formulator

This app offers over 200 formulas to help you on electrical, carpentry and plumbing calculations. Not to mention, this app also includes concrete and excavation formulas that will help you estimate the concrete and bricks required. It also contains formulas for steel design, parking area and even swimming pool designs. All in all this is one seriously powerful app that will set you apart from your competitors.

4. Carpenter’s Helper

This might be my favorite app on the list.Carpenter’s Helper will help you calculate roof pitch, rafter lengths, stair lengths, and more. The app has a nice graphical interface that will calculate stair, roof and floor projects. Best of all the user interface is extremely accessable and friendly which will help in your immediate adoption of the app.

5. Builders Helper App

This really cool IPhone and iPad app calculates several construction projects: rafters, columns, concrete, stairs, drywall, painting, decking, roof, flooring and many more. All a contractor needs to help guys like me (and more importantly our significant others) have their dream home.

6. Fast Concrete Pad Calculator

The Fast Concrete Pad Calculator calculates the quantities needed of concrete and rebar for your next project. But the feature I love the most is that it will also calculate waste materials, concrete and rebar costs. Any time an app can make you more efficient at your work therefor making you more money, it’s a winner.

7. Drywall Calculator

Take it from a guy that is pretty sure he’s paid for more drywall sheets than he should have, this is a must have app for any contractor doing interior work. The Drywall Calculator app will calculate how many drywall sheets you will need to finish properly the input area.

8. Procore

This app allows you to create and manage punch list items, access contact data, share and store project photos, log time card entries and more. In addition, you can also manage construction schedules, RFI’s, submittals, change orders and many other processes.

As a contractor, you are living the dream of dudes like me that are not “handy” in any way, shape, or form. I salute you and the work you do. As a nerd with a streak of dude in him I hope you find this list and these apps helpful to your endeavors.
