5 iPad POS Systems for Restaurants

Tablets have quickly become a staple in the world of point of sale systems. Many of the best POS systems out there exclusively support the iPad and, luckily for restaurant owners, are designed with hungry customers in mind. Without further ado, here are some of the best restaurant POS systems for Apple’s popular tablet.

Breadcrumb Pro

Breadcrumb Pro App Review - Moblized

Made by Groupon, Breadcrumb Pro is a great starting point if you’re just getting into tablet-based POS. If you don’t have any hardware yet, Breadcrumb provides a multitude of hardware packages that allow you to customize your own terminal. Each terminal includes an iPad 2, a secure cash drawer, a Vault Enclosures iPad stand, a MagTek card reader and a receipt printer. Packages range from one terminal to five terminals and are priced accordingly, ensuring there’s one to fit your business no matter its size.

The feature list of Breadcrumb Pro is extensive. It includes a fully customizable floor plan that lets you view table availability in real-time, draw new tables and merge existing ones.

Menu management lets you create courses and change menus, and adding in a customer request, such as how well cooked they want their steak, takes just one tap. There’s no need to be constantly rushing to the kitchen with tickets, as the system lets you easily and wirelessly print orders to the kitchen with the included printer. Breadcrumb Pro also lets you sell and accept gift cards, easily split and merge checks and void or comp any item or meal.

The system goes above and beyond POS, as it also includes staff management and real-time reports. Breadcrumb Pro tracks when employees clock in and out and the amount of time each employee has worked on a given day.

A handy bulletin board lets you scribble down shift notes, menu changes and more directly to the Breadcrumb system. The real-time reports are well designed, letting you access and understand important information like weekly sales, product mix, labor and revenue as quickly as possible. Breadcrumb also lets you subscribe to any report so that it will be automatically sent to you, and reports are accessible from any iPad or web browser. The combination of POS, management and analytics is fast becoming the norm in POS systems, and the inclusion of all three in Breadcrumb Pro makes it a well-rounded package easy to recommend.

Pricing: Plans range from $99/mo for one iPad to $399/mo for up to 10 iPads.

Instore

Instore POS App Review - Moblized

Instore is a great option for those looking for an iPad POS system with a focus on clean, simple design and ease of use. On the sales front, everything you’d expect is here, from accepting any payment method to creating customer tabs. Instore also lets you create items with special taxes (or no taxes), add tips either at the sale or when closing books and accept partial payments.

A couple particularly cool features separate Instore from other iPad POS systems on the market. First, the ability to let you create and customize a full gift card program for your restaurant is a great addition, allowing Instore to have a real impact on your customer interaction. Second, Instore integrates with EatStreet, a prominent online ordering platform. EatStreet provides a custom website for your restaurant and allows for ordering on mobile, web and social media. Its integration with Instore means you can manage online and in-store orders at the same time, all on a single Instore POS system. Another important distinction to make regarding Instore is that, unlike ShopKeep, Breadcrumb and Revel, the only piece of hardware you get upon sign up is a card reader. Adding hardware like iPad stands and card readers is up to you and should be viewed as an additional cost.

Rounding out the package, Instore also supports employee management and business reports. Track employee hours and pay, view labor reports and audit employee actions with dedicated PINs. Reports, like the rest of the system, are clean and easy to comprehend, and allow you to export them to Excel and QuickBooks.

Instore is a great solution for those looking to make their restaurant POS system as simple to use and understand as possible without sacrificing any important features.

Pricing: Signing up nets you a 14-day free trial. After the trial period, pricing is $99/mo per location.

ShopKeep POS

Shopkeep POS App Review - Moblized

Like Breadcrumb, ShopKeep combines standard point of sale features, analytics and management into one system, and features the ability to build your own registers as well. ShopKeep’s hardware options come with a focus on build quality, and include an iPad, Heckler iPad stand, Star Micronics ticket printer, APG cash drawer, MagTek card reader, label printer and Socket barcode scanner.

When it comes to ringing up sales, ShopKeep does it all. Add items by tapping, searching or scanning via a barcode scanner. You customers can pay with cash, credit, or mobile payments like PayPal or LevelUp, and then choose from either traditional or email receipts.

Orders can be customized and wirelessly sent to the bar or kitchen printer as well. Inventory and employee management are supported on top of the POS features - track inventory pricing, quantity and stock level with the former, and track employee shift hours and payroll with the latter. ShopKeep also integrates seamlessly with QuickBooks, automatically syncing sales data to Intuit’s program for those times when you require a more detailed breakdown.

ShopKeep’s customer service team is worth noting, as it won a Gold Stevie Award this year and a Bronze Stevie Award in 2013. The team is available via phone, email or chat seven days a week. ShopKeep also has a free app for iPhone and Android that provides a dashboard overview of your business’ performance, and lets you track live sales data, view a sales summary report and monitor gross margin.

Pricing: Signing up gives you a free 30-day trial. After that, each register is $49/mo. Hardware bundles range from $649 to $1,404.

Revel

Revel Systems App Review - Moblized

Revel’s feature set is absolutely huge. So huge, in fact, that it is broken down into different POS systems based on what kind of business you own. Those that apply to the restaurant business are: Restaurant POS, Bar POS, Quick Service POS, Food Truck POS, Yogurt Shop POS, Pizza Restaurant POS, Deli POS and Coffee Shop POS.

Each one of these dedicated POS systems runs on Revel’s cloud-based iPad app and provides a unique set of features. For example, the Deli POS system includes ingredient-level inventory management to keep track of everything that goes into making a sandwich, while the Frozen Yogurt POS system includes scales to weigh toppings that integrate seamlessly with the Revel system. A number of pre-configured hardware setups are provided by Revel to help your system run as smoothly as possible.

If your restaurant doesn’t fit into one of the aforementioned systems, don’t fret! Those systems are simply pre-made configurations using certain features from Revel’s overall feature set, so you can build your own system to fit your restaurants needs. Like many other restaurant POS systems, Revel includes support for standard features like customized table layouts, payroll management, reporting and bar tabs. The system also accepts pretty much every style of payment, including Bitcoin and gift cards.

The feature list goes on and on, but the picture is clear: Revel’s ability to bend its POS system to fit the exact style of your business is nothing short of impressive.

Pricing: Because each Revel POS system is unique, those interested need to call Revel at 844-584-3316 to get a quote.

Lavu

Lavu POS App Review - Moblized

Lavu is another great iPad POS system to consider for your restaurant. Lavu supports multi-room table layouts, course numbering, and order routing to multiple printers to help keep things organized. Also included is the ability to split checks with ease, set gratuity and void any order.

Lavu, like others on this list, provides inventory management, employee management and exportable reports. On top of that, the entire system is wireless, allowing you to take and send orders from any device connected to your network and process payments directly from your customer’s table.

When it comes to hardware, Lavu recommends that you contact them to order the pieces you need to complete your setup. Otherwise, Lavu is purely iPad software.

While not as fleshed out as Revel’s POS system, Lavu does include support for three unique restaurant types: food trucks, bars and pizza restaurants. Lavu’s food truck POS is built around real-time data, letting you update your menu and track ingredients at any time.

The bar POS helps you create special discounts on the fly and set a schedule for automatic price adjustments. The pizza POS gives you a delivery system, marketing tools and the ability to take customized pizza orders. These unique systems, combined with a robust feature set, elevate Lavu above a standard iPad POS system and make it an easy recommendation for any restaurant.

Pricing: Ranges from $39/mo to $149/mo, depending on the size and needs of your restaurant.
